Please go to our homepage and fill out the online application. www.wpr.petfinder.com Phoenix is a HEMMINGWAY POLYDATYL! Phoenix's owner in NE Iowa is in the hospital and her husband took Phoenix to the vet office to be put down because he did not want to care for him while his wife is in the hospital. Vet just could not do it because he is such a nice cat so she called us for help. He is a WPR kitty now. He is up to date on shots, tested FeLV / FIV negative and neutered. He is living in a foster home. Phoenix is about 9 years old Hes extremely obese at 23.3 lbs, but has lost a few pounds on a special diet here at the clinic. We made sure he wasnt diabetic, he just needs to lose more weight. 6/24/13 UPDATE: Phoenix is a large cat with an even bigger heart! (Hes on a diet). He absolutely loves to be brushed/petted and he purrs so loud that you can hear him in the next room! Hes a very easy going cat and is very scared at first in a new place but after a few days, he warms up very nicely! UPDATE 7/8/13... WOW!!! Phoenix is truly a very unique cat! When his foster mom first laid eyes on him, besides his massive size for a shorthaired kitty, she discovered this big boy has something else oversized besides his weight... Phoenix is a HEMMINGWAY POLYDATYL! Also known as 'mitten cats' because they have an extra toe (or sometimes toes, plural) on their front paws - and some people also say their front paws look like a catcher's mitt! Definately very unusual and rare!! Another unique discovery... one of the most rare types of Polydactyl cats is one who has extra toes on BOTH the front and back paws... and DA TA! That would be our Phoenix! He has 6 toes on his front paws and 5 toes on both back feet - for a total of 22 toes! HOLY COW! Our big boy Phoenix is one of the most rare types of Polydactyl cats - Who knew?? Check out the pics of him and see how big his feet are - and count those toes!!! However exciting this discovery is about his extra toes, this extremely 'big boy' desperately needs to get some weight off before it drastically begins to affect his health. He had his blood tested and fortunately has not developed any health problems due to obesity, so his foster mom has started him on a new weight loss program for cats. He is now being fed a newly introduced dry cat food diet called Fat Cat. This food was specifically formulated by a Natural Balance Pet Food veterianian to help overweight cats lose weight. It has lean protein (chicken and salmon) and a unique layering of soluable and insoluable fiber which helps cats stay full and satisfied longer and also helps move the food correctly through the digestive system for weight loss. We are hoping this helps Phoenix get to a much more comfortable weight and allows him to enjoy doing fun things that cats like to do, other than sleeping and being petted/brushed! (And he really does enjoy being combed with the Furminator de-shedding comb!) A sweet, sweet boy who is very loving and has many happy years left to live - and we'd like to get him into a furrever home who will help him live a happier, healthier life from now on... and who knows? Maybe you'll be able to teach him to play CATCH with his 'catcher's mitt' paws, too, someday if he's a little slimmed down (like baseball players)!!! 9/19/14 UPDATE: Phoenix came to my house as a foster kitty last week. He was shy and hid at 1st. He would let me pet him but did not move or purr when I did. Today he did seek me out to for attention. Such a sweet boy. I am sure this is confusing for him to have lost his home. He doesn't seem to want to be around other cats, so would be best in a home with no cats. He is loving to my children but they are 10 and 7 and treat cats properly. Would be best in a home with no small children that might pull his tail or something. He now enjoys being petted, just took him some time to trust and acce
